Alright folks, here’s the final installment of easy ways to be greener around the workplace. If you’ve been paying attention to these, you have probably noticed a reoccurring theme: these are simple as hell. Seriously, most of the items I’ve brought up are common sense. They are not groundbreaking by any means, but are you doing any of them?
How much pull do you have: If you just started at your office or place of employment, you may want to wait a week or so before you toss this idea to the bosses. If you have some pull, suggest getting a recycling program going. Of course most employers have recycling bins set out around the workplace, but how many people use them? If you see someone throwing paper away rather than putting it in recycling, give them a friendly reminder. If they do it again, treat them like a cat on the kitchen counter and spray them with a squirt gun (SustainTheGreen.com is not responsible for anyone losing employment due to squirting co-workers).
No need to cool an empty desk: Every day at my work, there is a battle for the air conditioning. Some may in fact like it hot, but most prefer it cool. I will be the last to tell anyone they should be working in a sauna, but when the day is over and everyone goes home, make sure your air conditioning is on an automatic cycle so as not to run throughout the night.
Save your work and turn it off: Now for the one that will most likely make you scratch your head and think, “are you kidding me?” Turn off your computers people! Do I really have to explain why this is a good idea?
Like I said, this is not rocket science. The purpose of the last three articles was not to blow your mind, but rather illustrate how ridiculously easy it is to be a little greener. I mean hey, if the Sierra Club can give ten “no shit” ways to go green at work, why can’t we? Oh, and if you have some more ideas, no matter how simple or elaborate, let us know about them. What good is knowing green tips if you don’t share them.
